पूरे देश में फाल्गुन मास की पूर्णिमा को होलिका दहन किया जाता है, लेकिन इससे आठ दिन पहले ही फाल्गुन अष्टमी से अशुभ काल शुरू हो जाता है, जिसे होलाष्टक के नाम से जाना जाता है. होलाष्ट के इस दौरान कोई भी शुभ कार्य करना वर्जित होता है. ऐसी मान्यता है कि होलाष्टक के दौरान किया गया कोई भी शुभ काम सफल नहीं होता है, साथ ही आशीर्वाद भी व्यर्थ हो जाता है. इसके अलावा, इस अवधि को बीमारी, कष्ट वाला कहा जाता है
